About the Ethereum Unit Converter

Ether is divisible into 18 decimal places. The smallest unit, wei, is 0.000000000000000001 ETH. Gwei (one billion wei) is the standard unit for gas prices, and one ether is a billion gwei.

Conversions here use integer arithmetic rather than floating point numbers, so large wei values are exact and never suffer from rounding errors.

Ethereum Units and Denominations

Ether (ETH) can be divided into very small units. The smallest is the wei, and one ETH equals 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 wei (10 to the power of 18). Smart contracts work in wei internally, while wallets and gas trackers use friendlier units like gwei.

  • Wei: the smallest unit, 1 ETH = 10^18 wei.
  • Kwei, Mwei: 1,000 and 1,000,000 wei.
  • Gwei: 1,000,000,000 wei, used to quote gas prices. 1 ETH = 1,000,000,000 gwei.
  • Szabo and finney: older names for 10^12 and 10^15 wei.
  • Ether: the main unit, 10^18 wei.

What Is Gwei and Why Does It Matter?

Gwei is the unit used to price gas, the fee you pay for a transaction on Ethereum. A gas price of 20 gwei means you pay 20 billionths of an ETH for each unit of gas. Multiply the gas price by the gas used to find the fee, then convert it to ETH or dollars.

For example, a simple transfer uses 21,000 gas. At 20 gwei the fee is 21,000 x 20 = 420,000 gwei, which is 0.00042 ETH.

Quick Conversion Rules

Wei to ETH: divide by 10^18. Gwei to ETH: divide by 10^9. ETH to gwei: multiply by 10^9. ETH to wei: multiply by 10^18. The converter above does all of these in one step and avoids the long strings of zeros.

How do I turn a gas price in gwei into a fee in dollars?

Multiply gas price in gwei by the gas used, divide by 1,000,000,000 to get ETH, then multiply by the live ETH price.
