About the Average Cost Calculator

Your average cost is the total amount spent divided by the total units bought. Buying more when the price falls pulls the average down, which lowers the price you need to break even.

Averaging down is a risk management tool, not a guarantee. If an asset keeps falling, adding to the position increases your exposure.

How to Calculate Your Average Cost

Your average cost is the total money you spent divided by the total coins you bought. The formula is: average cost = total spent / total coins. Because each purchase has a different price and size, this is a weighted average.

Example: you buy 1 coin at 100 USD and 3 coins at 80 USD. You spent 340 USD for 4 coins, so your average cost is 85 USD per coin.

Why Average Entry Price Matters

Your average cost is your break even point. If the market price is above it, your position is in profit. If it is below, you are at a loss. Knowing the number helps you set targets, plan stop levels and decide whether buying more will lower your average.

Buying more after a price drop is often called averaging down. The calculator shows how a new purchase changes your average, so you can see the effect before you commit.

Average Cost and Dollar Cost Averaging

Dollar cost averaging (DCA) is a habit of buying a fixed amount on a schedule. The average cost calculator is the tool you use to measure the result of that habit. To see how a past DCA plan would have performed, try the Bitcoin DCA calculator.

Average Cost Calculator FAQ

How do I calculate average cost?

Add up the money spent on every purchase and divide it by the total number of units. For example, 1 coin at 100 and 2 coins at 70 cost 240 for 3 coins, an average of 80.

Does it work for stocks too?

Yes. Any asset bought in several lots works, including crypto, stocks and ETFs.

Are fees included?

Add fees into the price you paid per unit if you want them reflected in the average.

How do I find my average buy price?

Add every purchase with its price and amount. The calculator divides total spent by total coins to give your weighted average price.

What does averaging down mean?

It means buying more of an asset after its price falls, which lowers your average cost per coin. It does not remove risk, and the price can keep falling.

Does the calculator include fees?

You can include fees by adding them to the cost of each purchase. This gives a more accurate break even price.
